Hedychium gardnerianum — Lys gingembre/ Butterfly lily
Originally found in the north of India, up to 2000 m altitude in the Himalayas. Yellow scented flowers appear at the end of summer. The leaves are more rounded and horizontal than those of H. coronarium. In humid and warm climates this species can become quite invasive (for instance in New Zealand).
The genus
Rhizomatous perennials of the ginger family are found naturally inforest edges and moist places. The tall foliage can provide a very decorative screen. The butterfly shaped flowers are very fragrant. Flowering improves when crowded and left undisturbed. Their cultivation requirements are like those of cannas and should be planted near the surface. They are also suitable to be grown in containers.
