Hedychium greenii
Ressembles very much H. coronarium, but the plant is smaller with 20-30 cm long lanceolate leaves. The cylindrical spike with pale pink flowers appears the end of the summer. After flowering bulbils are formed in the inflorecens which can be replanted.
The genus
Rhizomatous perennials of the ginger family are found naturally in forest edges and moist places. The tall foliage can provide a very decorative screen. The butterfly shaped flowers are very fragrant. Flowering improves when crowded and left undisturbed. Their cultivation requirements are like those of cannas and should be planted near the surface. They are also suitable to be grown in containers.
