The exact species of this Hedychium native to Bhutan is not certainly identified; the genus, in the Zingiberaceae family, includes around fifteen Himalayan species, among them Hedychium coronarium, H. gardnerianum, and H. flavescens, common in the region. These are rhizomatous perennials with upright, leafy stems from 1 to 2.5 m tall, bearing large lanceolate leaves. In late summer and autumn, highly fragrant spikes of white, yellow, or orange flowers open at the stem tips. It grows well in part shade, in rich, moist soil during growth, with a dry winter rest sheltered from frost.
