Hedychium thyrsiforme

Hedychium thyrsiforme is a rhizomatous plant native to the eastern Himalayas (India, Nepal, Bhutan), still uncommon in cultivation. It forms a compact clump about 1.2 m tall, with broad, lush, dark green foliage. In late summer it produces dense, elliptical terminal inflorescences, nicknamed "pincushion ginger," made up of delicate white flowers with long, protruding filaments. It prefers light shade, tolerating a few hours of morning sun, in rich, well-drained soil. Like other Hedychium, it dies back in winter and regrows from its rhizomatous rootstock the following spring.
