The species name is incomplete and cannot be identified; this entry describes the genus Herbertia as a whole. Native to the Americas, from the southern United States and Mexico to Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and southern Brazil, this small genus of bulbous Iridaceae grows from tunicated bulbs with brown, papery coats. The blue to violet flowers last only a day: three large oval outer tepals contrast with three much smaller inner ones, often streaked white. Spring flowering, acid soil, sunny position, consistent moisture while growing. Species not confirmed with certainty; description given at genus level.
