Herbertia sp?? ex Pickard

The exact identity of this introduction, collected by Pickard, remains uncertain; it is offered here under the generic name Herbertia. This small bulbous genus of the iris family, native to South America (with one species in the southeastern United States), grows from a tunicate bulb. Pleated, linear-lanceolate basal leaves accompany a simple or branched stem bearing short-lived, iris-like, blue-violet flowers with three large obovate outer tepals and three much smaller inner ones. It grows well in full sun, in well-drained soil, with a dry rest period after flowering.
