Hesperantha radiata

Native to the Cape region of South Africa, Hesperantha radiata reaches about 40 cm tall and flowers in spring. Its flowers, white to cream, often red to brown on the outside, are nodding, borne on a recurved tube, with reflexed tepals. They remain closed and folded around the stamens during the day, then sweep open late in the day and stay open through the night, closing again the following morning. Strongly scented, sweet with a clove-like note, and rich in nectar, they are pollinated by moths. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny to lightly shaded position.
