Hippeastrum hybride

Hippeastrum hybrids comprise several hundred cultivars derived from crosses between South American species of the genus (Amaryllidaceae), chiefly from Argentina, Brazil and Peru. This large bulb produces broad strap-shaped leaves and a hollow flower stalk 40-60 cm tall, bearing an umbel of 2 to 6 large trumpet-shaped flowers in a wide range of colours (red, pink, white, bicolour). Flowering occurs in winter under forced indoor culture, or in spring when grown outdoors. It requires rich, well-drained soil, a bright position and protection from frost.
