Hippeastrum reginea

Native to South America (Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, central-southeastern Brazil), Hippeastrum reginae grows in seasonally dry tropical regions, where the bulb becomes dormant during the dry season. This Amaryllidaceae forms a tunicated bulb 5-12 cm across, with long, strap-shaped, blue-green leaves reaching up to 50 cm. In spring, a stout scape about 60 cm tall bears an umbel of large, trumpet-shaped flowers, bright orange-red with a white or greenish-yellow throat, up to 12 cm across. It needs a sunny position, well-drained soil, and a dry winter rest period.
