hom/crocos marron BB sp2

Category photo (no photo of its own for this entry)
This accession combines two South African Iridaceae genera, Homeria (now in Moraea) and Crocosmia, difficult to tell apart before flowering from corm and foliage alone. Homeria/Moraea is a geophyte of the Cape's winter-rainfall regions, with ephemeral, iris-like flowers; Crocosmia, native to summer-rainfall regions of eastern and southern Africa, produces corms sometimes spreading by stolons, erect sword-shaped leaves, and arching spikes of tubular summer flowers, generally orange to red. In this plant, labelled 'sp2', flowers of a brown/chestnut hue have been noted, distinguishing it from other accessions in the batch. The precise genus remains to be confirmed at the next flowering.
