Hyacinthella dalmatica

Endemic to the northwestern Balkan peninsula (the Dalmatian coast of the former Yugoslavia), Hyacinthella dalmatica grows on rocky hillsides that are hot and dry in summer. A bulbous perennial related to Muscari and Bellevalia, it reaches 30-45 cm and typically produces three basal leaves. In early to mid-spring it bears a loose raceme of tubular to bell-shaped flowers in a soft, pale blue, with dark blue anthers held within the mouth of the tube. Like other Mediterranean rock-garden bulbs, it needs sharp drainage, full sun and a dry summer rest.
