Hyacinthella millengenii

Endemic to Cyprus, with a few populations recently found in southern Turkey, Hyacinthella millingenii grows on rocky, calcareous hillsides between 50 and 750 m altitude. This small bulb produces two narrow, upright leaves with inrolled margins, tinged purple at the base. From November to February, a loose raceme bears small, tubular, bell-shaped, pale blue flowers with violet-tinged stamens and dark anthers. A diminutive species suited to well-drained calcareous soils, it needs full sun and a dry summer rest, typical of Mediterranean winter-flowering bulbs.
