Hypoxis rigidula

Native to a wide range across eastern and southern Africa, from Kenya to South Africa, Hypoxis rigidula is a deciduous, tuberous herbaceous perennial growing in open grassland. It forms an upright clump of narrow, grey-green, slightly twisted, hairy leaves that arch backwards. Spikes of golden-yellow, star-shaped flowers open from August to March, carried on slender stems rising above the foliage. Two forms are distinguished by the density of leaf hairiness. This species requires a sunny position, well-drained soil, and typically grows in open grassland with a marked dry season.
