Agapanthus inapertus is a deciduous species native to the highlands of South Africa (Transvaal, Mpumalanga), distinguished from other agapanthus by its narrow, nodding, barely-opening tubular flowers, carried in late summer on very tall stems that can exceed 1.5 m. Colours range from blue to deep violet depending on the subspecies. It grows in full sun, rich, well-drained soil, and needs winter protection in cold climates, the foliage dying back in autumn.
