Iris acutiloba

Ranging from the Caucasus to Iran through Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Dagestan, Iris acutiloba is a small rhizomatous iris of section Oncocyclus, with narrow, sickle-shaped leaves. Its dwarf stems, 5 to 8 cm tall, bear a single flower in spring or early summer, varying from cream to pale grey or light violet, heavily veined, marked with two dark spots and a short brown to black beard. A highly variable species grown ornamentally, it requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a strictly dry summer dormancy.
