Iris afghanica

Discovered on the northern side of the Salang Pass in north-eastern Afghanistan, at altitudes up to 3300 m, Iris afghanica belongs to section Regelia. It forms small tufts of fine, blue-green, partly sickle-shaped leaves up to 30 cm long. The flowers, 8 to 9 cm across, have pointed creamy-white falls heavily veined with purplish-brown, marked with a central purple patch and a beard of yellowish to purple hairs. Accustomed to hot, dry summers and freezing winters, it requires perfectly drained soil and a strictly dry summer dormancy in cultivation.
