Iris barnumae

Native to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Iraq and Turkey, Iris barnumiae (also spelled barnumae) is a rhizomatous perennial of the Oncocyclus section with narrow, pale glaucous-green, slightly sickle-shaped leaves that fade after flowering. In mid- to late spring it bears fragrant flowers in shades of purple, from red-purple to mulberry and purplish-violet, lacking the veining typical of most other Oncocyclus irises, with a small, near-black signal patch and a yellow beard tipped with purple. The larger standards are obovate to rounded. It thrives in well-drained soil, full sun, and requires a dry summer dormancy.
