Iris cycloglossa

Iris cycloglossa is a striking Juno iris endemic to the Herat region of western Afghanistan, growing between 1450 and 1700 m elevation in areas subject to winter and spring flooding. A geophyte with a small, blackish ovate bulb and fragile tuberous roots, it bears glossy grey-green foliage with a thin white margin and produces, in June — late for a Juno — up to three large flowers per stem, rich blue-violet marked with white and yellow, with a clove-like fragrance. More tolerant of moisture than most Junos, it nonetheless grows best in full sun on well-drained soil.
