Iris flavissima

Described from Dahuria in eastern Siberia and also found in China, Iris flavissima (now often treated as a synonym of Iris humilis, section Psammiris) is a small rhizomatous steppe iris about 15 cm tall. It flowers from mid-April, producing pale yellow flowers finely veined with purple-brown above narrow, erect foliage. Adapted to harsh continental climates, it tolerates very cold winters but needs well-drained soil and a dry summer to thrive. In cultivation it suits a sunny rock garden in poor, free-draining soil.
