Iris fosteriana

Native to the steppes of north-eastern Iran, in the Kopet Dag range, and to Turkmenistan, Iris fosteriana is a Juno-group bulbous iris standing 10 to 15 cm tall. Its slender bulb with tuberous roots bears deeply channelled, silver-edged mid-green leaves. In spring it produces one or two unscented, long-tubed flowers with rich purple standards and creamy yellow falls. It grows on dry, stony ground between 750 and 2000 m altitude, and in cultivation needs very free-draining soil, full sun and a dry summer dormancy, often grown under a cold frame.
