Iris gatesii

Native to the steppes of southeastern Turkey and northwestern Iraq, Iris gatesii is a rhizomatous species of section Oncocyclus, with long, narrow grey-green to glaucous leaves. In spring, between April and June, a sturdy stem carries a single giant flower, among the largest in the genus, up to 13-20 cm across, with pale grey, orbicular standards and falls finely veined and spotted with purplish red-brown. A rare species seldom seen in cultivation, it requires alkaline, well-drained soil, full sun, and a completely dry summer dormancy, sheltered from rain.
