Iris germanica ‘florentina’ — Bearded iris, Iris à barbe
The form "Florentina" well known because of its legendary background dating from the reign of the Medici in Florence. It is found naturalised in the south of France and Italy. Because of its modest height and capacity to survive adverse conditions it is firmly recommended for wild plantings as a soilcover on banks etc.
The genus
Iris is a very large genus from the Northern hemisphere with about 300 rhizomatous or bulbous species. There are 6 sub-genus, each of which is again divided in sections. Examples of subgenera: Iris (rhizomes, bearded flowers), Limniris (rhizomes, flowers without beard), Nepalensis, Xiphium (bulb), Scorpiris (Juno), Hermodactyloides (the Reticulatas).
