Iris hermona

Endemic to Mount Hermon and the Golan Heights, in Israel and Syria, Iris hermona is a clump-forming rhizomatous iris of section Oncocyclus, first discovered in the Quneitra Valley. Its erect, bluish pale-green leaves accompany a 30 to 50 cm stem bearing a single flower, 11 to 16 cm across, light pinkish-purple with delicate parallel netlike lines. Pollinated by male Eucera bees that shelter overnight inside the floral tube, this vulnerable species grows in pastures and rocky scrub margins, and requires well-drained soil and a sunny position in cultivation.
