Native to China and Japan, Iris japonica (Japanese iris or fringed iris) is an evergreen rhizomatous perennial of the family Iridaceae, forming clumps of glossy, lance-shaped, fan-arranged leaves up to 45 cm long. From spring to early summer, branched stems bear numerous flattened white to pale blue flowers with fringed petals marked by orange crests and purple blotches, giving an orchid-like appearance. It prefers humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, partial shade, and dislikes both prolonged drought and waterlogged winter soil.
