Iris juncea

Iris juncea, the rush iris, belongs to the Juno group and grows wild in North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya) and Sicily, on dry, well-drained hillsides. It forms a globose bulb with reddish-brown fibrous tunics, from which narrow, rush-like linear leaves up to 60 cm long emerge in autumn. In spring, stems 30–45 cm tall bear one or two fragrant, golden-yellow flowers with drooping, finely brown-veined sepals. Like other Juno irises, it requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy after flowering to ripen the bulb properly.
