Iris kirkwoodiae

Native to northern Syria and the Amanus Mountains of Turkey, Iris kirkwoodiae (originally Iris kirkwoodii, honouring Mrs Grace Kirkwood) is a rhizomatous perennial of the Oncocyclus section, growing 30 to 75 cm tall, making it one of the taller species in the group. In April and May it produces large, sphere-like flowers, white to pale greenish, densely covered with dark purple veins and dots, with a rounded deep purple signal patch and a beard of long brown-purple hairs. Rare in the wild, it requires well-drained soil, full sun, and a dry summer rest period.
