Iris nicolai

Iris nicolai, described by Vvedensky in 1935, is a Juno iris native to the mountains of Central Asia, between the Pamir-Alai range and northern Afghanistan. A small bulbous geophyte, it flowers early in spring, producing large creamy flowers with deep violet to imperial-purple falls, highlighted by a golden crest and a touch of yellow at the base of the petals. Like other high-altitude Juno irises, it grows on well-drained, stony soils and requires a sunny position, with a dry summer dormancy essential for it to flower reliably the following year.
