Iris nusairiensis

Endemic to the Nusayriyah coastal mountains of western Syria, Iris nusairiensis is a small bulbous iris of the Juno group (subgenus Scorpiris), only 7 to 10 cm tall. Its brown bulb, bearing fleshy storage roots, carries around six glossy green lance-shaped leaves. The flowers range from pale blue to blue-white, with a pale yellow crest on the falls and darker blue veining on the hafts. Considered on the verge of extinction in the wild, it requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a strictly dry summer dormancy in cultivation.
