Iris paradoxa

Native to the Caucasus mountains of Armenia, Iran and Turkey, Iris paradoxa is a rhizomatous perennial of the Oncocyclus section growing on stony hillsides between 1200 and 2000 m altitude. Standing about 15 cm tall, it is notable for an unusual flower structure: large, upright standards contrasting with very small falls, carrying an almost velvety black or purplish-black beard. Colours range from white through lavender, mauve, violet and medium purple to near-black. Sometimes called the "unusual iris" or "velvet iris," it requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy.
