Iris persica, one of the earliest Juno irises to be described, was named by Linnaeus in 1753 and has been cultivated in Europe since the eighteenth century. Native to southern and southeastern Turkey, northern Syria and northern Iraq, it grows on dry hillsides between 100 and 1650 m elevation. A small bulbous geophyte about 10 cm tall, it bears narrow leaves with a pale margin and greyish underside. Its highly fragrant flowers, some 5 cm across, range from brownish to greenish or greyish. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position, and a dry summer dormancy after its early flowering.
