Iris planifolia

Native to the Mediterranean basin (southern Europe, North Africa), Iris planifolia is a bulbous iridaceous plant with a large ovoid brown bulb about 5 cm across and fleshy, cylindrical roots. The narrow, glossy, dark green leaves reach 10 to 30 cm long. In late winter, large scented flowers appear on a short stem, in shades of blue to violet. The plant then goes summer-dormant. It requires full sun, sharp drainage and a Mediterranean-type climate with dry summer conditions.
