Iris ruthenica is a small rhizomatous iris native to Siberia, Central Asia and north-east Asia, belonging to the group of grass-leaved irises. It forms a compact tuft of fine, narrow leaves, above which small blue-violet flowers delicately veined with white open in spring. Modest in size, it is particularly well suited to rockeries. It is grown in a sunny position, on well-drained soil, and is hardy, tolerating the cold winters of its continental native range well.
