The exact species of this marsh iris is not specified, but its habitat suggests the group of wetland irises such as Iris pseudacorus, the yellow flag iris, native to Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. It is a rhizomatous perennial with creeping rhizomes and upright, glaucous green, sword-shaped leaves, forming large clumps at the edges of ponds and streams. In spring, large yellow flowers open, often mottled with brownish-purple. It grows well in full sun and in waterlogged soil, tolerating permanent submersion up to about twenty centimetres.
