Iris tingitana

Native to Morocco and Algeria, where it also grows naturalised in Spain and Portugal, Iris tingitana is a bulbous iris of the subgenus Xiphium. Its large, veined red-brown bulb produces two channelled leaves each autumn, framing a stem reaching up to 60 cm. Between February and May it bears one to two blue flowers marked with fine pale blue veins. The species is among the historic parents of the Dutch iris hybrids grown for cut flowers. It thrives in well-drained soil and full sun, requiring a thoroughly dry summer dormancy after flowering.
