Iris willmottiana

Endemic to the western Tian Shan in Uzbekistan, Iris willmottiana is a compact, robust bulbous iris of the Juno group, reaching about 20 to 25 cm. Its broad, glossy green leaves surround a short stem bearing up to six spring flowers, pale lavender-blue with a large white area on the falls marked with violet-blue blotches and lines. Like other Central Asian Juno irises, it requires rich, perfectly drained soil, a sunny position, and a strictly dry summer dormancy, as the bulb is sensitive to excess moisture outside the growing season.
