Ixia bellendenii

Now treated as a variety of Ixia longituba (Ixia longituba var. bellendenii), this South African cormous Iridaceae, native to the winter-rainfall Cape region, differs from the type variety in its larger, deep pink flowers. It grows in small colonies and flowers in spring and early summer, carried on the slender, erect stems typical of the genus Ixia. Like other Ixia, it thrives in poor, gritty, well-drained soil and a sunny position, and tolerates drought well once established, with a dry summer rest.
