Ixia patens

Known only from around Villiersdorp in the Western Cape of South Africa, where it was rediscovered after long being thought extinct, Ixia patens grows in fragments of renosterveld along the Villiersdorp-Worcester road. This cormous Iridaceae is distinguished by its relatively large flowers, deep pink and rarely red, usually somewhat darker at the centre. Although its range is very narrow, the species remains locally common on the remaining fragments of natural vegetation, but must be regarded as seriously threatened. It requires well-drained soil and a sunny position.
