Ixia viridiflora

Endemic to the Western Cape (South Africa), between Malmesbury and Tulbagh, Ixia viridiflora is a cormous geophyte 50-100 cm tall, with narrow sword-shaped leaves forming a basal clump. Its branched stem bears, in spring (October), a long spike of brilliant turquoise-green, star-shaped flowers, each marked with a strongly contrasting purple-black eye — a colouring unique among Iridaceae. It grows on rocky clay and granite slopes, habitat that is shrinking due to agriculture, placing it among vulnerable species. In cultivation it needs full sun and well-drained soil.
