‘Johannesburg’

Amaryllis belladonna 'Johannesburg' (Amaryllidaceae) is a selected cultivar of the South African species, native to the Cape region. Like the type, this perennial bulb produces sturdy, leafless stems in late summer bearing umbels of large, fragrant, trumpet-shaped flowers, here in a deep pink shade, before the strap-shaped foliage appears; the leaves persist through winter and die back in spring as the bulb enters summer dormancy. Grow in full sun in well-drained soil; hardy to around -10 °C, best given a sheltered spot such as a warm wall.
