Kniphofia serpentosa

The name 'Kniphofia serpentosa' could not be reliably matched to a well-documented species, so this description is given at the genus level. Kniphofia (red hot pokers or torch lilies) is native mainly to southern and eastern Africa, growing in moist grassland and montane habitats. These perennials form clumps of narrow, grass-like, often glaucous leaves from which rises a flowering stem topped by a dense spike of tubular flowers, ranging from orange-red to yellow, blooming from spring to autumn depending on the species. They are grown in full sun on moist, well-drained soil, and most species are reasonably hardy.
