Knowltonia

Knowltonia is a genus in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) with about 25 species, native mainly to southern Africa with a few in Latin America. These perennials, with a stout rootstock, typically grow in shade on the floor of Afromontane forests or other sheltered habitats. The foliage is dark green, often glossy, with toothed leaflets; in spring small white or yellowish flowers appear in umbels, followed by fleshy fruit turning black at maturity - distinguishing Knowltonia from the related genus Anemone, which has dry fruit. The sap is a skin irritant. In cultivation, plants prefer rich, moist soil in shade.
