Lachenalia contaminata
Easily differentiated by its narrow grass like leaves (semi-terete). Creamy yellow flowers with purple stripes near the tip of the petals. The yellow stamens are very prominent. Very effective in mass plantings
The genus
There are numerous species of Lachenalia (all from the Cape, South Africa). All make an excellent pot plant: decorative foliage, long lasting wax like flowers during the winter months and they grow well in pots. Use a light sandy mix and plant in August on reception of the bulbs. Foliage soon emerges after the first watering; keep them frostfree . Repot the bulbs every year. Flowering order: L. bulbifera, L. aloides 'Pearsonii' and 'Aurea', L. pustulata, L. pallida., L contaminata.
