Lachenalia purpureo caerulea

Native to the southwestern Cape (South Africa), where it grows on stony flats, Lachenalia purpureo-caerulea is a threatened species with a very restricted range, in sharp decline due to habitat loss. The bulb produces two pustulate leaves, often mottled with purple or brown. In late spring, a scape bears fragrant, bell-shaped flowers, white to blue at the base, ageing to purple-mauve, with prominent exserted stamens. It requires full sun, well-drained soil and a dry summer rest.
