Lachenalia splendida

Native to the sandy flats of the northwestern Cape, South Africa, Lachenalia splendida is a bulbous geophyte 6-25 cm tall with two unmarked leaves. In late winter (July-August), it produces a spike of sessile pale blue and vivid lilac flowers with prominent stamens, making an excellent pot plant that slowly forms a dense clump over three to five years. Like other Lachenalia, it is fully dormant through the dry Cape summer. It requires well-drained soil, a sunny position and moderate winter watering.
