Lapeirousia oreogena

Endemic to a small area between the Northern and Western Cape, South Africa, Lapeirousia oreogena grows on clay soils in the northwestern Cape. This cormous Iridaceae, known as "cushion cabong" or "perskussing", rarely exceeds 5 to 10 cm in height. Its linear to sword-shaped leaves are ribbed, and its violet flowers bear distinctive cream and near-black markings. Pollination is highly specialised, carried out by a single long-tongued fly species, Prosoeca marinusi. The plant requires well-drained soil and a sunny position, with a dry summer rest.
