Leucocoryne appendiculata

Leucocoryne appendiculata, known as "glory of the sun", is a bulbous plant endemic to northern Chile, between Tarapacá and Atacama, growing in desert and arid upland scrub. It flowers in late winter, bearing an umbel of white flowers with three yellow staminodes ending in a fine thread. The flowers, which turn pink with age, truly open only in the evening and cool night hours, releasing a lemony scent that attracts night-flying moth pollinators. Rarely seen in cultivation, it needs well-drained soil and a dry summer dormancy, like most Chilean bulbs.
