Leucocoryne macropetala

The genus Leucocoryne, known as 'glory-of-the-sun,' is endemic to central and northern Chile. Leucocoryne macropetala, like the other species, grows from a tunicate bulb producing narrow, elongated leaves with an onion-like scent when crushed. A slender stem bears an umbel of fragrant, star-shaped flowers with white, blue or lilac tepals, notably large in this species as its name suggests. Flowering occurs in spring. It grows well in full sun, in light, well-drained soil, with a dry summer rest period, typical of bulbs from Chile's Mediterranean-type climate.
