Leucojum/ Acis nicaensis

Formerly classified in the genus Leucojum as Leucojum nicaeense, this small bulbous plant has been reclassified into the genus Acis as Acis nicaeensis. Endemic to a very restricted area of south-eastern France, in the Maritime Alps around Nice, it forms tufted clumps rarely exceeding 18 cm tall. Thin leaves appear before the flowers, borne singly or in twos or threes per stem, white, with tepals 8-12 mm long ending in a sharp point, opening in late winter to early spring. Believed extinct in the wild, the species now survives only in cultivation, making it a notable botanical rarity.
