Libertia grandiflora

Endemic to the North Island of New Zealand, where it is known by the Maori name mikoikoi, Libertia grandiflora is a rhizomatous perennial Iridaceae forming dense clumps of tough, evergreen, ribbon-like leaves resembling those of an iris, reaching over 75 cm. It grows on forest margins, steep slopes, cliffs and stream banks, from coastal areas up to moderate elevations. In spring and summer, dense umbels of white to creamy-white flowers, sometimes tinged with purple, are borne well above the foliage on stiff stems, followed by decorative seed capsules. Grow in well-drained soil, in full sun to part shade; tolerates light frost.
