Lilium canadense

The Canada lily, Lilium canadense, is native to eastern North America, from Ontario and Nova Scotia south to Georgia and Alabama, most common in New England, the Appalachian Mountains and the Canadian Maritimes. It grows in moist meadows, thickets and along streams. The scaly, stoloniferous bulb produces an erect stem 0.5 to 1.5 m tall, bearing whorls of lance-shaped leaves. The nodding, bell-shaped flowers, yellow, orange or red and often spotted with purple-brown, open in June and July, with mature bulbs producing up to twenty blooms per stem. Grow in cool, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in part shade.
